Today I want to share with you the hope of being delivered from Trauma Induced Shame. Many people struggle with feelings of shame at times, but God gives us understanding and comfort as we fight to be free from shame. Shame is painful and has the power to cause us to be buried in it. The grave of shame can deeply affect our lives, especially when it is rooted in trauma. It can make us feel unworthy, isolated, and disconnected from both ourselves and God. To truly understand shame and find deliverance, we can learn from the story of Adam and Eve, whose initial shame after sinning illustrates the depth of this emotion.

In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve enjoyed perfect communion with God. There was no fear, no shame, and no hiding. However, when they disobeyed God and ate from the forbidden tree, everything changed.

Genesis 3:7-10 (NKJV) says, “Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

Adam and Eve covered themselves and hid from God, reactions that demonstrated their shame. They felt exposed, vulnerable, and unworthy. This feeling of nakedness was not just physical but deeply emotional and spiritual. They were now aware of their disobedience and felt the weight of guilt and shame.

This scenario mirrors what happens in our own lives. When we experience traumas such as abuse, neglect, or betrayal, we often feel unworthy and exposed, just as Adam and Eve did. Trauma-induced shame can make us feel that we are somehow damaged or deficient. This emotional nakedness leads us to cover ourselves in various ways.

Shame often manifests through specific behaviors and attitudes. These characteristics can be indicators of unresolved trauma in one’s life.

Characteristics of Shame

Here are some indicators that you might be living in the grave of shame:

• Feelings of Worthlessness

Shame makes us feel that we are not good enough. This feeling of worthlessness can stem from past traumas, failures, or criticism from others. We believe that nothing we do will ever be sufficient or valued. This makes us withdraw from relationships and isolate ourselves to avoid the perceived judgment of others

• Worrying About What Others Think

When we carry shame, we become overly concerned with how others perceive us. We fear judgment and rejection. As a result, we constantly seek approval and validation. This worry can dictate our actions and make us anxious.

• Perfectionism in Response to Fearing Failure

To compensate for feelings of shame, we might strive for perfection in an effort to prove our worth. We set unrealistically high standards for ourselves out of fear that any failure will expose our inadequacy.

• Self-condemnation

Shame fuels a relentless cycle of negative self-talk. We replay our mistakes and shortcomings in our minds and criticize ourselves. This internal dialogue reinforces our sense of worthlessness and keeps us trapped in shame and trauma.

Despite all these, God calls us to come out of hiding. Just as He sought Adam and Eve in the garden, He seeks us in our places of shame and brokenness.

Hebrews 4:13 says, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

God already knows our deepest wounds and our greatest shame. He invites us to be “naked” before Him and lay bare our struggles with trauma and shame. God wants us to be completely honest and vulnerable about our hurts. This is not to condemn us but to heal and deliver us from the bondage of shame. When we bring our shame to Him, He covers us not with fig leaves but with His righteousness.

Isaiah 61:10 declares, “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.”

Do not cover up your nakedness before the Lord. Bring the shame and trauma to Him in prayer. Confess your sins and the ways in which you have tried to hide or cover them. Repent of any false beliefs you have about your worth and identity and renounce any lies you have believed about yourself because of trauma. Lastly, engage in prayer and fasting. Seek God’s deliverance from the strongholds of shame and ask Him to reveal and heal deep wounds.

Conclusion

Deliverance from trauma-induced shame is possible through the love and power of God. Just as Adam and Eve were covered by God after their fall, we too can be covered by His righteousness. Let us not fear being naked before Him, but rather embrace His invitation to come into the light and be healed. Remember, God’s desire is not to condemn but to restore and deliver us from all shame, 2 Peter 3:9 ‘The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance’.

We made it to convocation on the 27th just fine and I am happy to report that my daughters and I and those ministry partners here in Florida are reported SAFE!

Fortunately for us here in Jax the path of the hurricane was SOUTH of us.
